On this day we mark the first full day of peace in our continent after the bloodiest war in history, while also marking the 70th anniversary of the start of the peace process in Europe.
We must never forget that the origins of our European Union were born out of the deepest divisions our countries had ever known. In the UK, the actions of those in charge have begun undoing the hard work that the wartime generation worked so hard for, and we are paying the price with the lack of a unified response to today’s pandemic.
We should not need another crisis to remind our people that we are stronger united. This flag represents our hard-won fight for freedom and unity, and the agreement that when we do disagree, we will fight it out in a Parliament rather than a battlefield.
Here’s to another generation of peace in Europe. 🍻
